Destination: Coldfoot
// March 3rd, 2009 // 2009: Pre-Arrival : The Journey

4,897 miles. 13-16 hour flight
Starting May 11, 2009, Teddy Worcester and Cory Limberger will be recording their voyage from Maine to the deep woods of Coldfoot, Alaska (67° 14′ 55″ N, 150° 9′ 3″ W). Our location will be 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 240 miles south of the Arctic Ocean. You may ask, why this location? We will be employed by Coldfoot Camps, one of the few marks of civilization along the Dalton Highway. And by civilization, I mean population 13 and a rudimentary hotel with “dining accommodations.” The Dalton Highway is the only means for truckers and other travelers to get from Fairbanks to the Arctic Ocean, where companies like Exxon Mobil, BP, and Hess are mining for the gold of the 21st century. It is my understanding that we will become well acquainted with these truckers as they stop for a bite to eat or a night’s rest at Coldfoot. Their route from Fairbanks to Deadhorse (where they are drilling) is not an easy one, considering the Dalton Highway is a bumpy ride, 414 miles of dirt highway with a 50 mph speed limit that rarely can be reached.

Hey Guys it was nice to get a note from you on Twitter. I am not so sure how to use it yet though. I live in a tiny town called Kasilof AK.It is about 180 miles south of Anchorage on the Cook Inlet and about 50 miles north of Homer AK. If on your way back south, feel free to contact us. My husband and I have lived in Alaska for 28 years. We live on 10 beautiful acres in the middle of nowhere. I wish you good luck and stay safe. Alaska as awesome as it is it can be dangerous as well. We seem to have alot of furry animals. Hope to hear from you again. Stay Safe ok….Laurel 1-907-260-8487
Ted, by the way, my other half works at Deadhorse AK. He has worked on the north slope for 18 years. If you know when you will reach Deadhorse or Prudhoe Bay, let me know by my email and maybe he can show you around. It’s very different and a once in a lifetime view into the lives of Alaskans.
Laurel,
Thanks so much for thinking of us. We will likely not make that far south but your thoughtfulness is appreciated. There is a good chance we will visit Prudhoe Bay at least once, however we will be working a bit south of there.
Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
